Dads and Doulas

Dads and Birth Doulas:

Many fathers, partners or other family members are curious about why you would want to hire a doula for pregnancy and labor support.

Many fathers worry that his partner doesn't trust him enough to be a support for her during labor. He may also be concerned that a doula’s presence at the birth will remove the intimacy of the moment.

My response to that is, a doula is there to help the father, as much as she helps the mother. A doula can never replace the fathers role.  The doula is a member of the birth team that can help the father to understand the process and how best to support the laboring mother.   The support of the doula can help the father to feel empowered and helpful instead of helpless and confused.
